Louise Stiles Psychotherapy

Not the world, not what’s outside of us, but what we hold inside traps us. We may not be responsible for the world that created our minds, but we can take responsibility for the mind with which we create our world.”
― Gabor Maté,

Counselling is a collaborative effort between the counsellor and client. Professional counselling helps clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health. We are complex human beings with unique experiences and challenges, we all need a safe space to flourish. Sometimes we aren't quite sure what that holds for our future, ourselves, our relationships. Together, we can thrive within the journey.

How long does counseling take?
Ideally, counselling is terminated when the problem that you pursued counseling for becomes more manageable or is resolved. This can vary, but the goal is to reach completion within a timeframe that feels appropriate for both parties.

Individual Counselling:
Individual counselling is a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during challenging times in life. Individual counselling can help one deal with many personal topics in life such as anger, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, marriage and relationship challenges, parenting problems, school difficulties, career changes etc. These may merge and become unmanageable. There can be more than one goal to achieve. That's okay.

Psychotherapy

Tailored solutions for growth and healing. Psychotherapy is often treatment based in response to a diagnosable mental health issue such as depression, bi-polar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, adjustment disorder, etc. It is often in-depth and we work together to plan your journey.

Counselling

Counselling tends to be wellness oriented, providing increased insight and learning how to effectively overcome problems and challenges.

Credits for late cancellation/missed session charges may be applied to your account at your therapist’s discretion, as in the case of an emergency.

What does a typical session look like?

Sessions are varied and their format is dependent on your treatment focus. Some sessions are more goal focused and practical - essentially us putting our heads together to brainstorm and problem solve a specific topic. Others are more free-form and exploratory.  Often this takes the form of getting curious about your present-day challenges and examining their links to past experiences and difficulties. This can also involve “insight’ where you are invited to turn your focus internally and observe your internal experience (emotions, sensations, memories, thoughts, images) as it relates to your presenting concerns.

What is a Registered Psychotherapist?

Registered Psychotherapist's are trained professionals who typically hold a master’s degree in counselling psychology. Psychotherapists are licensed to provide the regulated act of psychotherapy. They differ from Psychologists in that psychotherapists are unable to diagnose mental health conditions.

Are your services HST exempt?

Unlike psychologists, social workers, and doctors, services provided by psychotherapists are not HST exempt as per federal law. This is because Psychotherapy is a newly regulated profession within Canada. In January of 2023, a petition will be brought before the House of Commons to amend a law that would include psychotherapy as an HST exempt service.
